Settlement of Motor Insurance Claims

On behalf of insurance companies and other clients, we carry out inspecions of damaged vehicles. The completed claim files are returned to our customers together with the claim calculation after receipt of the necessary and available supporting documents.

01 Notifying a Claim

Please, make sure you notify your claim to the competent insurance company.  In the event of a collision involving more than two vehicles at the same time, you should contact the company where the insurance of the person who caused the accident (not necessarily the person who directly hit you) is held.

Which insurance company shall settle your claim?

  • If the accident was your own fault, your claim will be settled by the insurance company where your comprehensive motor (Motor Hull) insurance is held.
  • If the accident was caused by a third party, your claim will be settled by the insurance company where the compulsory motor third party liability (MTPL) insurance of the party at fault is held.
  • If you know the license plate number of the vehicle that caused the accident, MABISZ will provide you with information on the MTPL insurer of the party at fault.

If the party who caused the accident did not have valid MTPL insurance, please contact MABISZ at any of the following contact details: address: 1062 Budapest, Andrássy út 93., mailing address: 1381 Budapest 62., PO Box  1297., tel.: 06-1- 802-8400, e-mail: info@mabisz.hu

You can find the contact details of each insurance company under Our Partners.

Please note that the Electronic Accident Statement can be downloaded for Android from the Google Play Store and for iOS from the App Store.

When you notify the accident, please make sure you indicate where the damaged vehicle can be inspected and provide the telephone number (preferably a mobile phone number) of the person who files the claim. The competent insurance company will record the claim and place an electronic order with Atotal Insurtech Ltd. to survey the loss or damage.

02Claim Inspection

Upon receipt of the order to inspect the claim, Atotal Insurtech Ltd. will attempt to contact you within one working day to arrange a time and place for the inspection. In some cases, it is also possible to carry out a Motor Hull and MTPL inspection of the vehicle with video recording of the damage or with a chatbot solution.

03 Claim Calculation

Within two working days of the inspection the expert of Atotal Insurtech Kft.  will prepare a claim calculation. The remaining steps of the claim settlement process, such as the assessment of the legal basis (who is at fault for the accident), the commitment to payment and the payment of damages shall be the right and obligation of the insurance companies, and therefore the employees of Atotal Insurtech Kft. cannot provide you with any further information regarding the settlement of your claim.

06 International Claims Settlement

From 1 December 2021, our company operates as a MABISZ certified correspondent in Hungary. In this capacity, and as a claims representative, we represent a number of foreign insurers in Hungary.

Here is a summary of what you need to know if you have been hit by a foreign vehicle.

There are two distinct cases:

  • the foreign vehicle was involved in an accident with you in Hungary
  • the foreign vehicle was involved in an accident with you abroad

As a general rule, both parties must fill in the official European Accident Statement form (the so-called blue-yellow form). Please make sure that the details of the insurance companies are also filled in. There are some countries (e.g. Balkan countries: Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania) where it is recommended to always call the police after an accident.

You can also use a foreign-language Accident Statement form, as its content and format are uniform in all European countries. The questions are the same in all languages, and they are included in the same sections.

What to do following an accident in Hungary?

You can file your insurance claim against the Hungarian representative of the foreign insurer of the vehicle which caused the accident, known as the ‘correspondent’.
The name and details of the foreign insurer may be obtained from the completed Accident Statement or from any other official document (police report, insurance green card).
For information about the insurer’s correspondent in Hungary, please visit the website of MABISZ and then file your claim with the insurance company or loss assessment agency named as the correspondent of the foreign insurer.

What to do following an accident abroad?

To avoid language and administrative problems, all motor insurers established in an EU Member State entrust the settlement of motor insurance claims to an insurance company or claims settlement agency operating in the other Member State. This insurance company or agency is called the Claims Representative.
The Claims Representative is therefore the party who represents the motor insurer of the foreign vehicle in Hungary, and to whom the motor insurance claim must be sent.
The Claims Representative is responsible for transferring the injured party's claim to the foreign partner and then settling the claim with the partner's approval. Javasoljuk, hogy hazaérkezést követően haladéktalanul tegye meg kárbejelentését a kárrendezési megbízottnál.
Information about claim representatives can be obtained from the Information Centre operated by MABISZ.

What to do following an accident abroad if the other vehicle is insured with an insurance company from a non-EU country?

  • If the accident was caused in the same country where the vehicle at fault is registered – e.g. in the Ukraine by a vehicle with a Ukrainian plate number or in Serbia by a vehicle with a Serbian plate number – the claim may only be settled by the liability insurer of the vehicle with the Ukrainian, Serbian etc. plate number, and therefore the claim must be filed directly with this insurer.
  • If the accident was caused in a third country – e.g. in Austria by a vehicle with a Serbian plate number – first, you must contact the Insurers' Association of the country where the accident occurred, give the details of the parties involved, and request details of the correspondent of the insurer of the party at fault (i.e. the correspondent representing the insurer in the country where the accident happen) to proceed with the claims settlement. You must then submit your insurance claim to the correspondent.

In all cases, please note that claims shall be assessed and settled in accordance with the laws of the country where the accident occurred.

Countries where Atotal Insurtech Kft. represents local insurers in Hungary are:

United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece, Malta, United Kingdom
